, Wexford): A full breakdown of toxic and dangerous waste arisings is set out in page 34 of the National Data Base on Waste, a copy of which is in the Oireachtas Library. More recent, but less detailed estimates made by my Department indicate that national annual arisings of toxic and dangerous waste stand at some 66,000 tonnes, of which organic solvents and chlorinated solvents represent 53 per cent and 19 per cent respectively. Over 70 per cent of the hazardous waste arisings in Ireland relate to the fine chemical/pharmaceutical/medical products sector.
A new classification of hazardous wastes is envisaged by Council Directive 91/689/EEC, which lists 40 categories or general types of hazardous wastes. As indicated in reply to Question No. 79 of 28 April 1993, this Directive also lays down a procedure, which has not yet been completed, for drawing up a list of particular hazardous wastes, having regard to specified categories, constituents and properties. Future projections of hazardous waste amounts will depend on this new classification.
