Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Catchment Boundaries.

John Bruton

Question:

185 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education where members of the public may inspect maps which outline the boundaries between catchment of second level and primary level schools; the procedures which must be undertaken to alter catchment boundaries; and if arrangements exist to notify members of the public who may wish to express a view on any proposal to alter a catchment boundary.

For the purposes of the post primary education scheme the country is divided into catchment areas. There has been no demand from the public to inspect maps which outline the boundaries of these catchment areas. There are no catchment boundaries relating to primary schools. Transport entitlement is determined on the basis of the shortest distance to the nearest school.

The question of altering catchment boundaries is considered in consultation with, and the agreement of, the relevant local educational interests. Members of the public who wish to express a view regarding the alteration of a catchment boundary may do so by writing to the local transport liaison officer or to my Department.
