Vol. 434 No. 10

Written Answers. - Fish Farming.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

99 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Marine the number of salmon which escaped from a fish farm on the Cork/Kerry border earlier this year recaptured to date.

I presume the Deputy is referring to an escape of salmon due to net damage at a licensed fish farm at Inishfarnard, County Cork on 8 April last which was notified to the Department and the South Western Regional Fisheries Board.

Permits were issued at the time of the incident in order to facilitate the recapture of escaped fish by the company, under the supervision of the South Western Regional Fisheries Board. I am informed that, in spite of intensive netting over a period, no escapees have been recaptured. The technical advice avilable to me is that in all likelihood the fish in question dispersed at sea.
