Vol. 434 No. 10

Written Answers. - Public Works Funding.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

100 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Finance if he will recommend that the Office of Public Works provide funding for the restoration of the most historic building in Clonmel, County Tipperary, known as the Main Guard, in view of the availability of Structural Funds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I informed the Deputy on 9 March 1993 in reply to a similar question, the Main Guard is owned at present by Clonmel Corporation. It will not, therefore, be possible for the Office of Public Works to provide funding for restoration works.

Restoration of the building is, however, included in the programme put forward by the Office of Public Works for the next phase of EC funding. In the event of such funding becoming available and if the Corporation wish that the building be restored, it will be necessary for the Corporation to transfer ownership to the Office of Public Works.
