Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social, Personal and Sex Education.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

216 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has for the introduction of a standard social, personal and sex education programme at primary and second level; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to implement a comprehensive programme on social, personal and sex education in the school system.

In the case of the primary level, I have asked the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) to coordinate existing regional or schoolbased pilot programmes in the context of its review of Physical and Health Education.

In the case of the post-primary level, I have asked the NCCA to set up, as a matter of urgency, an expert advisory group to review the current provision in relation to health and sex education and to develop a programme for all post-primary schools.
