Vol. 440 No. 8

Written Answers. - Children with Learning Disabilities.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

87 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if she will examine the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who needs to attend special school because of his dyslexic condition; and if she will endeavour to have him admitted to an adequate school.

The issue raised by the Deputy has not previously been brought to this Department's attention.

The educational needs of children who present with a serious specific learning disability are catered for in three special schools, two in Dublin and one in Cork. The schools in Dublin are: Catherine McAuley, National School, Baggot Street, Dublin 2, and St. Oliver Plunkett National School, Monkstown, County Dublin.

In order to be considered for enrolment in one of these schools, a referral from a child guidance centre or a psychologist is required. An up-to-date psychological assessment is also required and this can be arranged through the local director of community care or privately.

Applications for enrolment should be made to the principal of the school in question.
If the child's parent wishes to enrol him in one of these schools she should proceed on the basis set out above. Should she encounter any difficulties in this regard, she should bring the matter to the immediate attention of my Department.
