Vol. 448 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Arts Report, 1991

Liam Lawlor

Question:

93 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he has read the Dublin arts report provided during the city's period as European City of Culture in 1991; if he will review the recommendations in the report with particular reference to the new town areas; if he will devise and finance a programme for Dublin based upon this review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1945/95]

I understand that Dublin Arts Report was published on 7 February 1992 and was commissioned by the Dublin Promotions Organisation Ltd. who together with Dublin Corporation, Dublin County Council and the Arts Council, provided financial and other support for the compilation of the report.

The report is a matter for consideration by the agencies that commissioned it. My Department does not have a role in the internal management of resources available to local authorities and therefore has no influence on decisions to be made within those authorities with regard to spending on the arts. Similarly, the Arts Council while funded by my Department, enjoys statutory independence in the distribution of its funds and in its decisions as to which projects should be funded.
