Question:

226 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the latest figures available on the actual number and percentage of first year university students who actually progress to second year. [16282/95]

I intend to take Questions Nos. 225 and 226 together.

The information on the number of students who fail one or more examinations is not readily available as it would require collecting data on approximately 2,000 subject and year of course examinations together with Autumn repeats and supplemental examinations.

The transfer rate of students who successfully complete first year and progress to second year is, however, kept under review. In 1993-94 there were 12,586 first year students of whom 11,630 progressed into second year in 1994-95. This represents a transfer rate of 92.4 per cent.
