Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Psychological Tests.

Helen Keogh

Question:

227 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education if she intends asking the universities to have psychological tests as to the suitability of students taking university courses. [16283/95]

Entry to full-time undergraduate courses is determined through the CAO system mainly on the basis of attainments in the leaving certificate or other equivalent terminal examinations.

In 1995 the CAO received acceptances from 32,000 students. The application of psychological tests, if suitable tests were available for all courses, would be a time-consuming and costly undertaking. Moreover, the acceptability of such tests to students and parents is doubtful.
In the circumstances there are no plans to introduce psychological tests for students entering third level.
