Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Air Support.

Ivor Callely

Question:

649 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, that has been made in respect of the provision of enhanced air support to the Garda Síochána; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15732/96]

In April this year, the Government approved my proposal for the establishment of dedicated air support for the Garda Síochána. This will involve the purchase of specialised aircraft which will provide the Garda Síochána with a 24-hour air support capability. The Air Corps already provide a significant level of air support to the Garda Síochána and the current proposals are directed towards enhancing that support.

I announced on 19 July that tenders have been invited for the supply of these aircraft.
