Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unfair Dismissals.

Ben Briscoe

Question:

480 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the average waiting time between application and hearing of an unfair dismissals claim before a Rights Commissioner and the Employment Appeals Tribunal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25211/96]

The average waiting time between application and hearing of an unfair dismissal claim before a Rights Commissioner is approximately three months.

In relation to the Employment Appeals Tribunal it is difficult to be precise because of the variations from area to area. However, a recent review of the procedures in the tribunal found that the waiting period was about six months in Dublin and slightly longer outside.

Management consultants and information technology consultants have been reviewing the tribunal's procedures and systems during 1996. In addition, a consultative committee, representative of employers and trade unions, has been set up. It is intended that these measures, along with additional resources, should enable delivery of an improved service.
