Vol. 478 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Security.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

90 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to two serious arson attempts on the Scoil Mhuire national school at Coolcotts, County Wexford; her views on the necessity to improve security to raise morale in the school for pupils, teachers and parents; if her attention has further been drawn to the many representations to her Department regarding security in this regard; the number of days which have been lost to the pupils owing to the attacks; the immediate proposals, if any, she has to resolve the situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11560/97]

I am aware of the problems being experienced at Scoil Mhuire national school, Coolcotts, County Wexford as a result of continued vandalism. My Department's records do not contain information concerning the number of days which have been lost to pupils owing to vandalism. However, I do accept the need to improve security at the school.

My Department has received an estimate for the cost of the proposed improvement works. Due to financial constraints it is not possible to state when a grant may be sanctioned in this case. However, the situation regarding capital funding is under constant review and the needs of this school will be considered again at the appropriate time.
