Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - State Solicitors.

Michael Ring

Question:

172 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance whether a State solicitor is paid for all the cases he handles for the State; and if not, whether the State only pays him for criminal cases. [16990/97]

State solicitors — other than solicitors in the Chief State Solicitor's Office who are public servants — upon appointment enter a contract with the Attorney General. Under this contract a State solicitor is obliged to conduct all legal business whether civil or criminal on behalf of the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Government Ministers and Offices of Government — such as the Office of Public Works, Office of the Revenue Commissioners etc. The remuneration arrangements for State solicitors relate to all elements of the contract.
