Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hackey Identification Plates.

Seán Power

Question:

235 Mr. Power asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will have arrangements made for the national acceptance of an identification plate on hackneys in view of the fact that many clients often mistake a private car for a hackney and get into it placing themselves in unnecessary danger. [17621/97]

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1995 require that a photograph of the driver, name of the driver, licence number of the driver and the vehicle, and details of the licensing authority, must be displayed inside a hackney so as to be easily seen by a passenger.

The regulations also require that a hackney plate must at all times be securely affixed inside a hackney in such a manner that it is clearly visible in daylight to a person wishing to inspect it without entering the vehicle.

Enforcement of the regulations is a matter for the Garda Síochána.
