Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Law Reform Commission.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

137 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the reports, or parts of reports, of the Law Reform Commission relevant to his Department which have not been implemented to date; whether implementation is under consideration or will be proposed in relation to each recommendation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1120/98]

There are no reports or parts of reports of the Law Reform Commission relevant to my Department. The commission is an independent research body whose statutory function is to keep the law under review and to formulate proposals for law reform. It is not, and never has been, the situation that Government are in any way bound to act on proposals of the commission. The position generally as to the implementation of the commission's recommendations is set out in its annual reports. Copies of the commission's latest available annual report — for 1996 — were placed in the Oireachtas Library on publication in April 1997.
