Question:

170 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the total number of bed spaces at St. Bricin's Hospital, Dublin 7; the level and usage of all services provided in the hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5186/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 122 and 170 together.

The Defence Forces review implementation plan 1996-98 adopted by the Government in February 1996 stated that a military hospital providing general medical, surgical, some specialist services and medical supplies would be located at St. Bricin's Hospital, Dublin.

Medical support in the Curragh Camp will be provided by a military medical facility which will continue to supply out-patient medical and occupational services, including dental and pharmacy services. The facility will also have an infirmary.
Cork Military Hospital will also become a military medical facility which will continue to provide the present out-patient services and will have a small infirmary.
Average bed occupancy at St. Bricin's Hospital varies between 20 and 40 patients. The hospital is neither equipped nor staffed to provide services other than those which it provides at present. However, any proposal that might lead to an increase in the utilisation of the hospital's facilities without additional expenditure being incurred by my Department would receive serious consideration.
