Vol. 489 No. 5

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

47 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when progress on the upgrading of the railway link between Kilcock and Dublin can be expected; if it is likely that works including the provision of station facilitates at Kilcock, extra rolling stock, extra track facilities and improved service are likely to accrue in 1998 on foot of the funding made available by her Department; the obstacles, if any, to the implementation of these enhancement plans; if the necessary EU funding remains available for these works; the extent to which the funding corresponds with requirements as envisaged; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8408/98]

Question:

76 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when she expects the necessary procedures, through preliminary stage to the opening of the proposed new railway station at Kilcock, County Kildare, will be completed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8527/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 47 and 76 together.

The rail services between Kilcock and Dublin are benefiting from an EU assisted investment package in the Dublin-Sligo line. This includes a major upgrading of track and signalling currently being undertaken with assistance from the Cohesion Fund. In addition, an allocation of Structural Fund assistance under the Operational Programme for Transport 1994 to 1999 includes provision for a new station at Kilcock.

The implementation of these projects is an operational matter for Iarnród Éireann. However, Iarnród Éireann has advised me that track renewal work will be taking place at Kilcock over the coming fortnight and that the station will be completed by the summer and on this basis the EU funding is secure.

In relation to current proposals for enhancement of services, the specific requirements of this line are being evaluated as part of a study of Dublin's suburban rail development needs in respect of which a consultants' final report is expected shortly. This study will form the basis for discussions with the European Commission on investment priorities and funding aspects.
