Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Homeless Children.

Question:

151 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of homeless children presenting themselves to a Garda station to obtain short-term accommodation for each month since January 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11619/98]

I understand from the Garda authorities that they are unable to provide the Deputy with the full details requested as figures are not available for the full period sought nor are they available for the whole country. The only figures available are for the period 1 August 1997 to 31 January 1998. These figures show that an estimated 565 young homeless people presented themselves at Garda stations in the Dublin region seeking accommodation during that period.
