Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Garda Deployment.

Martin Brady

Question:

339 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí on clerical duties; and the number of civilians in Garda stations on clerical duties. [24391/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that there are 377 members of the Garda Síochána currently engaged on clerical duties. The total number of civilians employed in Garda stations on clerical duties at 23 November 1998 is 764.5. This figure includes six temporary staff, employed on short-term contracts to cover absences on maternity or long-term sick leave.

Question:

340 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the staffing levels and the number of vehicles in service in Howth, Raheny and Coolock Garda stations. [24392/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about providing the detailed information sought by the Deputy on the grounds of security and in the interest of crime prevention generally. I propose, therefore, to provide the details on a district basis.

The staffing levels and the number of vehicles in the districts concerned at 23 November 1998 are as follows:

District

Strength (all ranks)

Vehicles

Coolock Garda District(including Coolock Garda Station)

167

17

Raheny Garda District(including Raheny and Howth Garda Stations)

146
