Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ministerial Appointments.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

255 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will list each appointment or nomination made by her to bodies, boards or organisations under the aegis of her Department since 1 July 2000; the method used by her Department in selecting people for such appointments; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21702/00]

Since 1 July 2000 appointments have been made to two bodies under the aegis of my Department.

On 10 July I appointed the 17 persons listed to serve as members of the Heritage Council for a term of five years.

On 6 September the Government appointed the five persons listed to serve as members of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission, also for a term of five years.

There is a wide variety of bodies under the aegis of my Department, from Údarás na Gaeltachta to the Irish Film Board and the national cultural institutions. People are selected to serve on the bodies or boards under the aegis of my Department on the basis that they will bring with them the personal or professional skills, qualities or expertise that are most appropriate to the particular body, and will ensure a wide representation on each board.

The Heritage Council (appointed 10 July 2000):

Tom O'Dwyer (Chair)

Ruth Delaney

Michael McNamara

Tomás Ó Caoimh

Pat Donlon

Primrose Wilson

Simon Berrow

William Smyth

Nessa Dunlea

Michael McMahon

Mary Bryan

Maurice Hurley

Con Costello

Virginia Teehan

Bride Rosney

Clare O'Grady Walshe

Nioclás Ó Conchubhair

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission (Government appointed 6 September 2000):
Oonah McCrann (Chairperson)
Joseph G. Brady
Kay Cogan-Daly
Gerry Collison
Christy Cooney.

Question:

256 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of appointments made by her to bodies, boards or organisations under the aegis of her Department since taking office; the number of these which were to full-time paid positions and positions in respect of which a fee is paid; the number in respect of which expenses are paid; if she has given consideration to any procedures for an independent system to examine or scrutinise appointments or nominations made by her; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21716/00]

The information requested by the Deputy is detailed in the following table. None of the appointments to bodies under the aegis of my Department were to full-time positions.

I am satisfied with the calibre of the people appointed to serve on the bodies and boards under the aegis of my Department and their ability to represent the public interest on those boards. Accordingly, I have no plans to introduce an independent system as suggested by the Deputy.

Number of appointments to bodies/boards since 26 June 1997

Number of positions inrespect of which a fee is paid.

Number in respect ofwhich expenses are paid.
