Vol. 524 No. 2

Written Answers. - Carer's Allowance.

Denis Naughten

Question:

237 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has to give an additional allowance to either parents or siblings caring for an individual with an intellectual disability in view of the fact that this individual puts an increased financial burden on the family concerned and such an allowance would reduce the demand for expensive residential care; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22249/00]

During the Committee Stage debate on the Finance Act, 2000, I undertook to review the issue of a tax relief for individuals who contribute to the cost of assisting with the upkeep of a dependent relative, an aged person or an incapacitated person in the context of the forthcoming budget and Finance Bill.

I will bear the Deputy's suggestion in mind in that regard.
