Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

101 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons who applied for the Garda in the recent recruitment; the number of examination centres; the location of the venues; when the results will be known for the first round of the exam; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16273/03]

Recruitment to the Garda Síochána is governed by the provisions of the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations 1988, as amended, and is by open competition conducted by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners. As Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, I have no function in the process of selecting candidates.

I have been informed by the Civil Service Commission that there were 6,783 applicants for the Garda recruitment competition 2003. There are seven examination centres for the 2003 competition at the following venues: Royal Dublin Society, Dublin; Institute of Technology, Cork; St. Finbarr's Hurling and Football Club, Cork; Castletroy Park Hotel, Limerick; Royal Hoey Hotel, Athlone; Institute of Technology, Athlone; and Leisureland, Galway. I am further informed that the results of stage 1 are expected to be available to candidates during the week commencing 21 July 2003.
