This month the Oireachtas Library is displaying an entertaining account of the 1831 trial of William Cobbett (1763-1835).
Cobbett was an English journalist and political activist who championed the rights of rural workers during the industrialisation of 19th century Britain. He was prosecuted for seditious libel after showing support for the so-called Swing rioters in his pamphlets and speeches. Cobbett represented himself in a courtroom packed with cheering supporters.
The Library’s monthly display continues to be virtual while many staff continue to work from home.
