Joint Committee on Transport to discuss decarbonising the hard-to-abate sectors (shipping and aviation): how to boost the uptake of sustainable fuels and maintain affordability and competitiveness

11 Jul 2023, 14:55

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 12th July, to discuss decarbonising the hard-to-abate sectors (shipping and aviation): how to boost the uptake of sustainable fuels and maintain affordability and competitiveness at 1:30pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

The meeting will hear from Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, Jack Chambers TD.

Committee Leas-Chathaoirleach Senator Gerry Horkan said: “our meeting tomorrow will give our Committee the opportunity to engage with the Minister of State on the decarbonisation of the shipping and aviation sectors. This ties in to the work we did at the recent European Parliament Interparliamentary Committee Meeting. We will look to get as much detail as possible on what has been implemented to date and what the Minister and Department think can be implemented to bolster the implementations so far.

We are aware of the need for intervention in order to address our climate responsibilities but our Committee members are also very cognisant of the importance of these 2 vital sectors to the Irish economy and its people.”

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
