16 Oct 2023, 16:58

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will meet on Tuesday October 17th with Tánaiste and Minster for Foreign Affairs and Defence Micheál Martin to discuss developments within the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Defence.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 15:15-18:15.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Charlie Flanagan said: “We welcome to hear from the Tánaiste regarding matters considered at meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council, developments within the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Defence and other matters under the department’s remit of both departments.”

“The Tánaiste met on October 10th with his EU counterparts at an emergency video conference meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers to discuss the ongoing violence in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory where he underlined the importance of principled and clear action by the EU, and emphasised the importance of moving towards de-escalation, and the need to protect civilians in line with international law.”

“At the extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Kyiv on October 2nd, matters discussed included how to strengthen and advance the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and how EU Member States can take active measures to deter Russian aggression against Ukraine.”

“We look forward to discussing these matters and upcoming plans for the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Defence with the Minister.”
