Vol. 123 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Facilities for School Children.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether and, if so, when he received an application for the provision of transport facilities for children attending Clough National Schools, Ballacolla, Laoighis, and whether the necessary arrangements have now been made.

I received on 20th July last an application for the establishment of a transport service to convey children to the Foxrock School, Clough, and I have had the matter fully investigated. The children referred to represent two small groups, one living to the south and the other north-west of that school. All these children—ten in number—live within three miles of an existing national school and in the circumstances I regret that I am not in a position to sanction a grant-in-aid towards the establishment of such a service.

Will the Minister say if the application was recommended by the school manager in this case?

I understand that the school manager is anxious to have a service of that particular kind but the number of children available and their location in relation to other existing schools, which are within three miles of them, are such that it is not possible to make a grant in this case.
