asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what is the number of claims to unemployment insurance benefit current according to the latest return, and what number of claims have been disallowed on the ground of exhausted or insufficient contributions since the commencement of the current benefit year.

The number of claims current on the 18th January, the date of the latest return, is 21,710.

Of the 38,584 claims decided in the current benefit year up to the 4th January, the latest date for which figures are available, the numbers disallowed on the grounds (1) that there were no unexhausted contributions to the credit of the claimants was 1,827, and (2) that less than 12 contributions had been paid at any time or that insurance had lapsed under the first part of Section 8 (4) of the Act of 1920, was 1,850.
