Vol. 18 No. 10

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WESTMEATH SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the school in Inchmore, Glasson, Athlone, was destroyed by fire more than four years ago, and is at present being conducted in a building the property of Mr. John Nolan, Inchmore, Glasson, Athlone, who has not been paid any rent for the past four years, and whether it is the intention to rebuild the school, and if he can state when Mr. Nolan will be paid the amount due to him.

The schoolhouse at Inchmore Island was destroyed by fire in 1923, and the school has been conducted since in temporary premises which were secured by the manager, There is no information as to the terms upon which the manager obtained the use of this temporary accommodation, and the question of the payment of rent is a matter for local arrangement.

A grant towards the cost of the erection of a new schoolhouse has been sanctioned in this case, and it is understood that the new building is practically completed.

Is the Minister aware that the manager got this building for use as a school for thirteen months, and only on condition that a new school would be erected? Is he aware that Inchmore Island has a mile of water on either side and that consequently the children cannot go to any other school?

I am not aware of the terms on which the manager got the temporary accommodation. That is a matter for arrangement between the manager and the person from whom he got the accommodation.

Is it not the Minister's business to see that proper schools are provided?
