*The figures shown represent the authorised maximum rate of wages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he has received a recommendation from the Mayo County Council to the effect that the wages of labourers and carters under the Road Board Schemes in that county should be raised from 25s. and 48s., respectively, to 28s. and 51s., and if he will state what action he has taken, or proposes to take, on this recommendation.

The recommendation mentioned by the Deputy has been received. It is not proposed to authorise the increase. The existing rate has been in operation for over three years, and is, in fact, higher than that paid by the Council to its own workers.

Will the Minister state on what basis this wage of 25s. was arrived at?

The rate was arrived at by the Roads Advisory Committee.

Are we to take it that the Minister considers that 25s. is a sufficient wage for the road workers of Mayo? Is that the Minister's decision?

The 25s. per week that is at present paid to those workers is 1s. less than the rate actually authorised.

Does the Minister consider 26s. per week a satisfactory wage for road-workers in Mayo?

Does the Minister say that it is in the power of the County Council, without his permission, to increase the rate by at least another shilling?
