Vol. 21 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CIVIL SERVICE APPOINTMENT.

asked the Minister for Finance why Mr. Eugene Sweeney, Stapleton Place, Dundalk, who obtained 42nd place in the examination held on 17th July, 1924, to fill 100 vacancies in the Clerical Class, Civil Service, did not obtain an appointment.

The candidate referred to had already been dismissed from the Post Office, and he was therefore unable to satisfy the Civil Service Commissioners that he was qualified in respect of character for admission to the Civil Service.

Regarding this case, I would like to ask the Minister is he aware that the good character of Mr. Sweeney has been vouched for by Father Hurson and Father Murray of Dundalk, and whether the Minister can state any other reason except that the candidate was a Republican when he turned him down?

The reason was that he had already been dismissed from the Post Office.

On what grounds was he dismissed from the Post Office—was it because he was a Republican or was it that he did not do his work correctly or properly?

That is another question. I would rather the Deputy would put that question down separately.
