Vol. 28 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Language Lessons on Wireless.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will state (1) what language lessons, exclusive of Gaelic, are at present broadcast from Dublin; (2) the time each week given to each lesson; (3) the cost per week of providing teachers for each of the languages; and (4) whether any estimate has been made as to the number of pupils availing of the lessons.

In addition to the lessons in Irish broadcast from the Dublin Station, one lesson of fifteen minutes' duration is given weekly in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Welsh. A fee of ten shillings is paid to the teacher for each lesson. No definite estimate has been made of the number of persons availing of the language lessons, but the number of inquiries received concerning textbooks appears to indicate that a fairly large number of people listen regularly to one or more of the lessons. The question of trying to ascertain the actual number of listeners to language lessons has recently been under consideration, and requests are at present being broadcast for persons availing of the various lessons to notify their names and addresses to the Director.
