Vol. 32 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Tax Collector and Knowledge of Irish.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that one of the collectors of taxes, Letterkenny, County Donegal, is unacquainted with the Irish language; and, if so, what steps, if any, does the Minister propose taking in the matter.

The collector referred to was appointed prior to the change of Government, and I am unable to state whether he is acquainted with the Irish language. As collectors of taxes are not normally transferable from one district to another, it is not proposed to take any action in the matter. If and when a vacancy in this collector's district arises, a person able to transact business in Irish will be appointed, if a suitable candidate is available.
