Vol. 35 No. 10

Written Answers. - Flooding of Donegal Farms.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if his Department has made any investigation into the damage caused by blowing sand in certain areas of County Donegal, notably in the vicinity of Horn Head; and whether it is intended to take any steps to reduce the flooding of farm lands thus occasioned and to prevent the recurrence of similar damage.

The Land Commission has had under consideration the general question of damage to agricultural land consequent on accumulation of drifting sand along the western seaboard, and has been in communication with the Department of Agriculture on the matter. The subject is one of extraordinary difficulty, and anything that may be done must seemingly be largely in the nature of an experiment.

The position in the particular area to which the Deputy refers has been investigated. Proceedings for the purchase of untenanted lands in the vicinity of Horn Head are under consideration, and if and when these lands are acquired the Land Commission will consider whether anything can be done to deal with the blowing sand menace and consequent flooding of land at that place.
