Vol. 37 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Harbour Improvements in Donegal.

asked the Minister for Finance whether any steps have been taken or are contemplated during the present financial year towards effecting those harbour improvements at Rathmullen, Co. Donegal, for which provision is made in the current Estimates.

The Engineers of the Commissioners of Public Works have in hands the preparation of plans and estimate of suitable works for the improvement of Rathmullen Harbour. When the plans and estimate have been prepared the matter will require further consideration with a view to a contribution from the locality.

It would not be possible to carry out any work during the current financial year.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say what is the cause of the delay which has taken place in regard to carrying out these improvements? Is he aware that the fishing industry is retarded as a result of the delay which has taken place?

Mr. Bourke

The matter has only been before us since January last as a matter of fact, and there is a considerable difference of opinion as to what contribution should be paid. We asked for a 50 per cent. contribution and the local people have only agreed to a one-third contribution so far.
