Vol. 38 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co. Sligo Dáil Loan Subscriptions.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state the number of persons in the Ballinfad district, in the old Parliamentary constituency of South Sligo, who have received a refund of their subscriptions to the Dáil Loan (Internal), 1919-20; the number of claims remaining to be dealt with; and if he can state when saving certificates will be issued to the remaining subscribers.

The form in which the records in my Department are kept is such that the compilation in a definite form of the information asked for by the Deputy in the first and second parts of his question would entail an amount of labour which would not, in my opinion, be justified. I may say, however, that a cursory examination of the outstanding applications indicates that repayment has already been authorised in favour of every subscriber in the Ballinfad area who applied within the prescribed period and whose subscription was received in the Dáil Department of Finance. The last part of the question does not, therefore, arise.

I am sure that the Minister is aware that a sum of £110 was subscribed in the parish of Ballinfad, and that £70 of this money reached the Department. The remaining sum, £40, was lodged in the Hibernian Bank in Ballymote, and did not reach the Department through no fault of the subscribers. In view of these facts, is the Minister prepared to consider the claims of the other forty subscribers whose subscriptions, through no fault of theirs, did not reach the Department?

I think that the Deputy would need to put down a separate question about that.
