Vol. 39 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co. Cavan Drainage Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if a scheme is in contemplation for the drainage of the river from Lundie's Mill through Termon and Gallon, Co. Cavan.

The Commissioners of Public Works have received a petition under the Act of 1925 for the improvement of the river which flows between the townlands of Termon and Gallon and into Lough Ramor at Virginia. The district has been inspected by an engineer and a land valuer and, as a result of their reports, the proposal is being considered as part of a comprehensive scheme for Lough Ramor area and the Blackwater river. It will not be possible for some time to state whether or not this scheme can proceed.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received any report from his inspector with reference to the drainage of the river passing through Kilnacrott, in the parish of Castleraghan, near Ballyjamesduff.

Mr. Bourke

The Commissioners of Public Works have received reports from both an engineer and a land valuer on the Mount Nugent drainage scheme which deals with the river flowing through Kilnacrott. This river flows into the Upper Inny drainage district, and consideration of the scheme has been postponed pending developments in connection with the Inny drainage district. The Commissioners have been given to understand that petitions under the Act of 1925 will shortly be presented in respect of the existing Inny drainage districts, and the Mount Nugent proposal will be considered for inclusion as part of a large comprehensive scheme.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has had any representations made to him by "The Lough and River Erne Drainage and Navigation Board," regarding the flooding of the low-lying lands north of Belturbet, which resulted in the loss of a great portion of the crops during the last month, and whether, in view of the extra water likely to come on these lands as the result of the two newly-sanctioned drainage schemes in Co. Cavan, he will say if he has made any representations in the matter to the Government of Northern Ireland.

Mr. Bourke

The Commissioners of Public Works have been informed by the Secretary to the Lough and River Erne Drainage Board of the flooding north of Belturbet. The Commissioners have been in consultation with the Northern Ireland authorities relative to a drainage scheme for the Lough and River Erne drainage district.

If the Cavan County Council agree to the proposed drainage schemes for the area south of Belturbet, the Commissioners intend to consult the Northern Ireland authorities as to the effect of these schemes on lands in Northern Ireland.
