Vol. 41 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Land Purchase in Co. Donegal.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state (a) what estates in Co. Donegal have been purchased under the Land Act, 1923; (b) what standard prices have the respective landlords received in respect of these estates; (c) whether all untenanted lands, such as turbary, mountain and plantations, are still in the hands of the landlords; (d) whether negotiations are in progress for the purchase of such lands, and, if so, on what basis is it proposed to fix the standard price; (e) whether tenants claiming turbary and grazing rights on lands in this category will have the conditions of sale explained prior to committing them to any contract, and be given an opportunity of stating their case and having any grievances investigated.

In Co. Donegal, 278 estates of tenanted land have been vested in the Land Commission under the Land Acts, 1923-31, at a total standard price of £823,183. The particulars of the individual estates have been published in "Irish Oifigiúil." Untenanted lands not already acquired by the Land Commission remain in the hands of the owners pending such time as the Land Commission may decide to acquire them. Under the Land Acts, 1923-31, the Land Commission have acquired in Co. Donegal, under Sections 24 and 36 of the Land Act, 1923, a total area of 9,705 acres of untenanted land on eight estates for a total price of £31,352, either agreed upon with the owners or fixed by the Land Commission, having regard to the value of the land to the owners and the Land Commission respectively. The term "Standard Price" applies only to tenanted land. Full opportunity is afforded to tenants to state their claims to turbary and grazing rights before their holdings are vested in them, and copies of the relevant Final Lists or Lists of Vested Holdings as gazetted are supplied to each tenant.
