Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Claims.

asked the Minister for Finance the following questions:—If he will state the cause of the delay in hearing the applications of John Lynch and Nora Lynch, Togher, Macroom, for old age pensions, and if he is aware that applications for the pension were made in each case on the 8th October, 1932.

If he will state the cause of the delay in hearing the applications of Daniel and Julia Sweeny, Bealick, Macroom, for old age pensions, and if he is aware that applications for the pensions were made in September, 1932.

If he will state the cause of the delay in hearing the applications of John Creedon, Aharas, Macroom, for an old age pension, and if he is aware that application for the pension was made on the 15th December, 1932.

If he will state the cause of the delay in hearing the application of Abina Walsh, Lomanagh, Coolea, Macroom, for an old age pension, and if he is aware that application for the pension was made on the 25th November, 1932.

If he will state the cause of the delay in hearing the application of Cornelius Cronin, Gurteenflugh, Ballingeary, Co. Cork, for an old age pension.

I shall take the Deputy's five questions together. The information requested by the Deputy is not readily available, but I am having enquiries made into the cases and will communicate with the Deputy at an early date.

Is the Minister aware that a number of these people were in receipt of home assistance which when they reached the age of 70 has now ceased? These people are now destitute and will the Minister give us any guarantee that their cases will be investigated immediately?

I have already intimated that I am having inquiries made as to the reasons why pensions are not being awarded in these cases. I am quite prepared to accept what the Deputy says in regard to home assistance, but I cannot commit myself to the statement that pensions will be awarded in all these cases.

In regard to that particular district complaints were previously lodged with the Revenue Commissioners.

This seems to be applicable to both North Cork and West Cork.

If the Deputy is aware of cases of unreasonable delay, I should be glad if he would communicate with me about these cases.
