Vol. 48 No. 8

Ceist—Question. Oral Answer. - Drainage of Kildare River.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the large amount of unemployment which exists in the area and the damage caused by the flooding of the river, it is proposed to undertake the drainage of the Greise River, Athy, during the present financial year.

The Commissioners of Public Works have received a petition under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, for the drainage of the Greise River (Lower), County Kildare, and an engineer is at present in the district engaged on making a detailed survey of the length of river concerned. Subsequently, the lands affected must be valued and the Minister for Finance and County Council approached for the necessary free grants before a detailed drainage scheme can be prepared and submitted to the votes of the occupiers of affected land. These investigations will occupy a considerable time and it is not possible to forecast when the works can be begun.
