Vol. 50 No. 4

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Turbary.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that a large number of the tenants in the town of Swinford and vicinity are put to considerable trouble and expense by reason of their having to travel a long distance to obtain supplies of turf, and whether he will take the necessary steps to acquire the turbary on the Doherty Estate at Esker, Swinford, have same drained and made accessible for distribution to those tenants.

The Land Commission have on record that there is an area comprising some 56 acres of untenanted land in the townland of Esker, on the Doherty Estate, in which are included 30 acres of bog. The question of the acquisition of this untenanted land has been noted for consideration, but it is not possible at present to state when the matter may be dealt with. Drainage, it is understood, may give rise to some difficulty and may affect the question of the suitability of the bog for acquisition.
