asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he can state the quantities of coal imported from (a) Great Britain and (b) other countries during the first ten months of the present year and for the corresponding periods in the years 1931 to 1934 inclusive; whether he can state in respect of coal imported from (a) Great Britain and (b) other countries the average price at which such coals were delivered at Saorstát ports in each of the respective periods mentioned and whether he will indicate the extent of the concession granted to (a) gas undertakings and (b) other authorities and institutions in respect of coal imported by them from British sources.

I am circulating with the Official Report a statement containing the information asked for in the first and second parts of the question.
As regards the third part of the question, gas undertakings are permitted, on application, to import coal, free of emergency duty, up to a maximum of 500 tons per annum, for any one concern. In addition, licences for the importation, free of emergency duty, of coal required for bunkering and for the following industrial purposes arc granted on application:—
Metal foundries, brick works, potteries and glass works, matting, brewing, distilling, bacon factories, creameries (including condensed milk, cheese and margarine factories), biscuit manufactures, railways, textile manufactures (including the manufacture of woollens, jute, linen, cotton and poplin), fertilizer manufactures, grain drying, lime burning, plaster-of-Paris manufactures.
Quantity and average import (c.i.f.) value per ton of Coal imported into Saorstát Eireann in each period of the ten months, January-October, in the years 1931 to 1935 inclusive.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would he indicate what classes in the community have no right to a licence to import coal free of duty? Is it exclusively those persons who burn coal in the tenement rooms in the city?
