Vol. 59 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Drainage and Improvement Work.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if by the time the marketing of the beet crop is completed he will subsidise drainage and other improvement work on farms, as land that is being turned over to corn growing from pasture will need such renovation which the farmers are not in a position to finance without the aid of a substantial subsidy, and if he is aware that such a scheme would also help to absorb the agricultural workers who will be out of work during the winter months.

Dr. Ryan

Facilities are provided by the Agricultural Credit Corporation for the issue of loans for the drainage of farm lands, and these facilities have, I understand, been already availed of to a large extent.

In the circumstances, I am not prepared to consider the suggestion that subsidies should be given by the State for this purpose.
