Vol. 63 No. 12

Committee on Finance. - Aran Islands (Transport) Bill, 1936—Committee and Final Stages.

Bill passed through Committee and reported without amendment.
Agreed to take the Report Stage now.
Bill received for final consideration.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

In the past I understand that some assistance was given by the Government for the maintenance of a service between the mainland and the islands. Are we to take it that it is proposed to maintain that service, or does the Government intend to purchase a boat or boats and put them into commission, so as to ensure that these people will be provided with transport?

I do not know to what service the Deputy is referring. If he is referring to the Aran Islands service, I explained on Second Reading that this service had been in operation for many years, but that it had been found impossible to continue it without Government assistance. I explained that the present Bill is designed to give sanction to any agreement which may be entered into between the Minister for Industry and Commerce and the Galway Steamship Company for the maintenance of this service. Under the Bill, it is proposed that there should be an annual subsidy of £300. I am not conversant with the position in Donegal. I am not aware that there are any such services in Donegal.

With regard to this service, will the Government get an assurance from the Steamship Company that they will provide a service to accommodate people coming from Achill Island to the mainland?

This Bill has nothing whatever to do with Achill Island. There is a bridge connecting Achill Island with the mainland, so that a steamship service is not necessary.

What about Aran Island?

There will be a definite agreement between the Department and the steamship company. That agreement has not yet been finally promulgated but, under it, the steamship company are bound to continue the existing service of two regular sailings weekly, at least.

Two sailings in the week?

Could you not run a daily service for these people?

I do not think that it is necessary. The service proposed is ample.

Question put and agreed to.
