Vol. 86 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the considerable increase in the cost of commodities and the consequent depreciation in the purchasing power of money, he is prepared to introduce proposals for the increase of the amount of the pensions payable to old people under the Old Age Pensions Acts.

The answer is in the negative. Since the 5th September last allowances in kind have been given to old age pensioners (including blind pensioners and their dependent children) resident in county boroughs and incorporated towns. The grant of these allowances represents the maximum concession which can be made in existing circumstances, due regard being had to the heavy commitments now being borne by the Exchequer.

Is the Minister aware, in connection with the application of the means test to old age pensioners, that means that existed prior to 1939, before war broke out, have not now the same value? Furthermore, is the Minister aware that vouchers are given only in a very limited area, within the borough boundaries of these cities? Surely, the time has arrived when an increase should be given to old age pensioners in receipt of 10/- a week.

Has the Minister any intention of extending the voucher scheme to the rural areas?

Not at present.
