Vol. 88 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Wool to U.S.A.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether a licence is necessary to import Irish wool into the United States of America; and, if so, what arrangements have been made with regard to such licences, and what agreement has been come to in relation to quantities and prices of such exports.

It is understood that the importation of all wools into the United States of America is prohibited as from 2nd July, 1942, except under licence issued by the Government of the U.S.A. No arrangements have been made in connection with the issue of such licences for the importation of Irish wool, or in regard to the quantities and prices of such wool which might be imported.

Is it not the intention to import Irish wool into the United States?

Yes—we hope so.

And has not the Minister informed the House that that is so?

Certain classes of wool.

The Minister now states that no arrangements have been made in connection with the importation of Irish wool. Has he any information for the House on that subject?

The importation of all wools into the United States was prohibited as from 2nd July.

Are any arrangements being made with reference to importing Irish wool?

I gave the Deputy all the information I have.

Has the Minister made any effort to make arrangements?

What can the Deputy expect since 2nd July?

Am I to understand that Irish wool is being exported to America?

Certain types of Irish wool.

Why are steps not being taken to manufacture it into cloth here?

Whatever wool is required for our own manufactures, it will be kept here.

Are we not rationing woollen goods and, in such circumstances, why should we export our raw material to America, thus leaving our factories idle through running short of wool?

I do not think there is any factory idle in this country for want of Irish wool.

When was the Minister aware that this prohibition Order was coming into effect?

A few days ago. It became effective on 2nd July.

Will any representations be made on this matter?

Yes, if any representations are necessary.
