Vol. 88 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices of Barley and Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can state what organisations of farmers were consulted before prices of barley and oats for this season were fixed; and, further, if production costings were taken into account.

I did not consult any farmers' organisation in regard to the prices to be paid to growers for barley and oats of this year's harvest. Official costings of productions are not available but the increased cost of production this year is reflected in the prices announced, which are substantially higher than those in operation last year.

Would the Minister not consider that, having regard to the unsatisfactory results of the prices fixed for oats and barley last year, which led to a maldistribution of the supplies available, and having regard to the general dissatisfaction prevailing, it is not too late even now to consult with farmers in regard to the prices?

I would like to assure the Deputy that I did consult very many farmers on this point but I said I did not consult any farmers' organisation.

The Minister is quite satisfied he did the right thing?

I am always satisfied about that.

I know you are.
