Vol. 88 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Pension Claims.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that an applicant for a military service pension named Martin Quinn, Cloonfad, Rooskey, has recently died in the County Home, Roscommon; that up to the date of his death no decision had been come to on his application: that his wife and orphan children are presently in need of assistance; and if he is prepared to urge the Board of Referees to come to a decision in the case, so that, if any pension is being allowed for this man's services, it may be made available at once to his widow and orphans.

The finding of the referee an the application under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, made by the late Mr. Martin Quinn, Cloonfad, Rooskey, County Roscommon, was issued to him on the 26th ultimo, in the absence of any notification of his death. The finding of the referee was that the applicant was entitled to 1? years' pensionable service, rank E. Intimation as to whether or not an appeal against such finding is contemplated, has not yet been received.

Mr. Brennan

It could not be received, because the man is dead.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that all outstanding matters in connection with applications for military service pensions for South Roscommon Brigade area were discussed between the Board of Referees and the verifying officers last March; that no decision has yet been announced on any of the applications then discussed, and when may decisions be expected.

I am aware that outstanding applications under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, from the South Roscommon Brigade area were discussed by the Referee and Advisory Committee and the verifying officers from the area in March last. The referee has notified some of the applicants concerned of his findings in their cases. As regards the remaining cases, investigation of the evidence adduced, together with the relevant evidence available to the referee, is as yet incomplete. It is anticipated, however, that decisions will be arrived at in these cases at an early date.
