I move:—
That Dáil Eireann hereby approves of the Sugar (Prohibition of Import) Order, 1944.
This is an Order which is made every year under the Control of Imports Act. The effect of the Order is to prohibit the import of sugar except under licence. In present circumstances, it is merely a formality.
Can the Minister give any forecast on this occasion as to what the sugar situation will be for the year?
I could not, at this stage. I do not anticipate that we will import any sugar.
But will there be sufficient sugar available for the year?
The Estimate for the Department of Supplies will be on later to-day.
The question does not arise now.
