Vol. 98 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Post Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the very inadequate accommodation in Sligo Post Office and the unhygienic conditions under which many members of the staff have to work; and, if so, if he will ensure that immediate effect is given to the recommendations already made for the reconstruction of the premises.

I am aware that there is need for improvement in the accommodation at Sligo Post Office, though the position is by no means as serious as the Deputy's question suggests. The matter is already under examination and plans for reconstruction will be prepared without avoidable delay. Improvement proposals were actually framed. Subsequently it became apparent that the rapid and unexpected development of telephone traffic made more extensive plans for reconstruction necessary and it is now clear that a major scheme of building alterations is required to meet the growing needs of the Sligo district.

When will the new scheme be ready?

As the Deputy, I am sure, realises, the supply of materials is a determining factor. We propose to get on with the job as soon as we can.

I wonder does the Minister realise how serious the position is. Complaints are frequently made by the public about the inadequate attendance at the counter and conditions in the telephone room are so primitive that they are a disgrace to any Department. If they existed in a private concern, I am sure the owner would be brought before the courts under the Factory Acts.

I understand from our experts in the Department that the picture painted by the Deputy is exaggerated.

Will the Minister go down and have a look at the telephone exchange there?

I have very efficient people to do that.

The picture painted by the Deputy is perfectly true.
