Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turkeys.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the price of 1/10 per lb. live weight payable to producers of turkeys for export is entirely inadequate, and there are general complaints by producers that this price is not economical owing to the high cost of feeding; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure that the price during the present season will be increased so as to give the producers a reasonable profit.

I do not agree with the Deputy's suggestions that the price payable to producers for turkeys for export is uneconomic, and that there are general complaints from producers to that effect. I do not propose to make any change in the existing arrangements.

Is the Minister aware that the same dissatisfaction exists in some areas in Waterford? Blackberry picking is now more profitable than turkey rearing and you will not see turkeys in Tipperary or Waterford.
